Imagine being able to eat keto fries without all the guilt of indulging in tons of carbs. I’m not even kidding; you are going to go crazy once you taste these jicama fries. While I don’t eat french fries a lot, I remember when I first started eating a gluten free sugar free low carb diet, I was worried that I might never get a french fry again. It’s like once you’re told you can’t have something, you just want it more and more!
That is no longer an issue! Thankfully this keto French fries recipe tastes better than you could ever imagine, and they fill your craving for salty french fries. Jicama fries have a naturally sweet flavor to them. They’re similar to sweet potatoes and can be fried to be super crispy. I've seen rutabaga fries as well in low carb recipes but jicama is our preference.
One of our favorite fun family dinners is appetizer night. Make up a batch of these fries and a few of the following: Broccoli Nuggets, Keto Buffalo Chicken Dip, Bacon Jalapeno Poppers, Keto Onion Rings, Air Fryer Fried Pickles, and/or Spinach Balls. Are French Fries Healthy?
Traditional french fries are not healthy. They are normally potatoes fried in hydrogenated oil. But you’ll be happy to know when you’re indulging in this appetizer or side dish; it also has some valuable nutrients that you’re going to want to include in your diet. You’ll get healthy fats in vitamin C from the coconut oil.
The jicama is rich in folate, potassium, fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants. As you can see these keto fries don’t just taste good, they’re actually good for you.
What Is Jicama?
Jicama is a sweet and edible root. Many people refer to it as a Mexican turnip. It does have a very tough skin, and it has firm flesh in the center. Because of how firm the jicama is it important to add it to water before you start to help soften it up. Then after you fry them, you’ll need to bake it for a few moments to give it the proper texture of french fries. You will be amazed how these low carb French fries made out of jicama taste so much like potato fries.
How To Make Keto Fries
These low carb keto jicama fries only require three ingredients, and you are sure to love them. Let’s get started with the step by step directions.
Step 1: Begin by placing the cut and peeled jicama fries in a bowl of ice-cold water for around 10 minutes.
Step 2: While the jicama is soaking, go ahead, and add coconut oil to a large saucepan. Turn up the heat to medium-high until it reaches 400 degrees. Remove the fries from the water bath and dry them with a towel.
Expert Tip: I prefer coconut oil but avocado oil or olive oil are other good choices.
Step 3: Turn on the oven to 400° Fahrenheit.
Step 4: Add a few of the keto fries to the oil and spread them out, so they are not touching each other. Cook them for 5 minutes until the bottoms are a golden brown color. Flip them over and cook them for an additional 5 minutes.
Step 5: Put the freshly fried low carb jicama fries on a baking sheet. Bake them for 10 minutes or until they have softened. Place the fries on a serving plate and add a little bit of salt. Repeat the process until all of the fries have been made.
Tips For Cooking Keto Fries:
- Cut the jicama fries, so they are evenly shaped. This will allow them to cook more evenly and give you the best result.
- Don’t undercook the keto jicama fries. While you can eat them right after frying they will still be crisp, like a raw potato. They need to cook for 10 minutes at 400° to soften so they will be the right texture.
- The fries will shrink a bit as they cook. This is completely normal, so don’t be alarmed.
Keto Fries Variations
The entire family loves to eat these keto fries just the way they are but every once in awhile I like to mix things up and try some new flavors and textures. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
- Loaded Fries: Turn them into loaded fries. After they’ve cooked, add some cheddar cheese, and some bacon crumbles for an extra-special treat. Top with some sour cream and some green onions and serve. One of the best keto recipes ever.
- Seasonings: Go wild and add any of the seasonings that you want. Garlic salt, cayenne pepper, Cajun seasoning, Italian seasoning, or even chili powder would all be great choices.
- Chili Fries: If chili cheese fries are your thing just top these with some no bean chili and shredded cheese and dig it!
- Fresh herbs: Sprinkle some fresh herbs on top of the cooked fries. Parsley, oregano, thyme, dill, or rosemary would all be yummy options.
- Cheese: Add any of your favorite cheese to the freshly cooked low carb fries. Cheddar, mozzarella, or even parmesan taste fabulous with the jicama fries.
- Poutine: This is one of my favorite comfort foods. Fries smothered in gravy and topped with cheddar cheese curds. If you've never had poutine before you need to try it! I've also had it loaded with pulled pork. Amazing. Here in NJ, the diner capital of the world, gravy and cheese topped fries are known as Disco Fries.
What Can I Dip Keto Fries Into?
- Sugar-Free Ketchup - you can make your own but I just buy this one.
- Keto Horsey Sauce - this is a delicious creamy horseradish sauce.
- Thousand Island Dressing, Ranch Dip, Dairy-Free Ranch, or Blue Cheese Dressing
- Keto Cheese Sauce
- Soak the jicama fries in ice cold water for 10 minutes.
- Meanwhile, heat up the coconut oil in a large saucepan. It should reach about 400 degrees before proceeding.
- Preheat oven to 400.
- Place a handful of fries into the oil. Spread them out so they are not touching. Cook about five minutes until the bottoms are golden brown. Flip over. Cook and additional 5 minutes or until golden.
- Transfer to a cooking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes or until softened. Transfer to a serving plate and sprinkle with a pinch or two of the salt.
- Repeat with remaining fries.
